In every Nativity scene, young and old alike place the figurines representing the Three Wise Men in front of the cave.
For the occasion, you can tell them the story of these wise men who came from far away, following a comet.
In Christian tradition, the Magi—or astrological sages—are said to have followed the star to Jerusalem to worship the infant Jesus, according to the Gospel.
The Gospel account describes them in extremely sparse terms, and later Christian tradition has added some details:
There were three of them (based on the three gifts they brought: gold, frankincense, and myrrh), and their names were Melchior, Balthasar, and Caspar.
In the late Middle Ages, it was believed that they were not only wise men but also kings,
who had symbolically come to pay homage to the infant Jesus from the three parts of the then-known world: Asia, Europe, and Africa.
For this reason, in artistic depictions, one of the Magi is sometimes portrayed with dark skin. According to Byzantine symbolism, they are often depicted as representing the three ages of man: the young man, the mature man, and the elderly man.
